On Different Working Methods

Although the mostly used ball mill is the dry grinding ball mill and wet grinding ball mill classified on working methods, the selection of these two types of ball mill are also the greatest confusion for investors. This part shows you the difference between dry grinding ball mill and wet grinding ball mill.

Ball mill for dry grinding

As the name implies, the dry grinding does not involve any liquid. The process is completed only by the collision and grinding between the raw material and the grinding media.

The ore in the grinding cylinder of the ball mill machine goes through certain crushing and milling. Finished products that meet the requirement will be taken out by the airflow, which is drawn out to the outside of the barrel. 

The materials are mixed with the grinding media and are ground into qualified particles by crushing and squeezing. In the dry grinding process, there is no material in the cracks to keep them from being squeezed smaller. This results in lower grinding efficiency and lower material separation speed.

Ball mill for wet grinding

Wet grinding, on the other hand, means that when a certain amount of grinding is completed under the interaction between the grinding media and the ore itself, and water is involved to meet the grinding requirements. The movement of the finished product is driven by water flow. 

In the wet grinding process, if there are small cracks on the large material surfaces, water or other liquid media will get into the cracks and paly a role of obstruction. Another crushing and squeezing from the grinding media will enlarge the cracks. Large materials are finally crushed and ground into qualified particles with higher grinding efficiency.

Difference between ball mills for dry grinding and wet grinding

The grinding principle of dry grinding ball mill and the wet grinding ball mill is the same. In addition to whether adding water or not in the grinding process, dry grinding ball mill can be distinguished from wet grinding ball mill by the structure and materials processed.

Structure

The structural difference between the two types of ball mill is mainly reflected in the discharge port.

The discharge port of dry grinding ball mill is shaped as straight-tube. And the air-inducing device is also equipped to remove dust.

While the discharge port of wet grinding ball mill is shaped like a horn, inside of which is a screw device for more convenient discharge.

Materials processed

Some materials like cement, marble react with water, producing other substances. This reaction affects the quality of the finished products. To deal with such materials, dry grinding can be selected at this time. Besides, some products are required to be stored and sold in the form of powder. Dry grinding is also a better choice.

In addition to materials that cannot be wetly ground or are required as powder, most grindable materials can be processed by wet grinding.

For example, all kinds of metallic ore and non-metallic ore including copper ore, iron ore, molybdenum ore, phosphate ore, feldspar, fluorite and so on.

The specific proportion of grinding media, raw material and water needs to be determined by test.

On Different Grinding Media

As the part that pretty much contacts with raw material, the grinding medium of ball mill has also become a common consideration in the selection of ball mill plant. According to the material and shape of the medium, the commonly used ball mill is steel ball mill, ceramic ball mill and rod mill.

Steel ball mill

Steel ball mill is a common ball mill with the grinding medium of steel ball. The main types of steel ball are high-chromium steel ball and low-chromium steel ball.

Ceramic ball mill

Ceramic ball mill is a new type of ball mill. Its grinding medium is a kind of high hardness inorganic non-metallic grinding medium. The main material of this medium is alumina and the additive are modified toughened zirconia. Besides, the liner of the ceramic ball mill is made of ceramic material.

Rod mill

The rod mill is a kind of mill with steel rod loaded in the grinding body, which is often used as a first-stage milling machine. When the rod mill works, the area between grinding medium and raw material is mainly changed from surface contact to line contact.

On Different Discharge Mode

According to different ways of discharging, the ball mill gets different names: grate discharge ball mill and overflow discharge ball mill.

Grate discharge ball mill

The grate discharge ball mill is equipped with a grate lining board on the discharging side. Products are discharged going through the grate liner and up with the fan chamber leading to the discharge port.

Overflow discharge ball mill

There is no grate liner on the discharge side of the overflow discharge ball mill. Instead, on the inner surface of the hollow bushing at the discharge size, there are helical blades, which rotate oppositely to the rolling barrel of the ball mill. This is to prevent water ball and coarse ore material from being discharged together with pulp.

The discharge of overflow type ball mill is caused by the pulp itself overrunning the lower edge of the bushing of the hollow shaft neck.

Generally speaking, due to the forced discharge mode, the grate discharge ball mill has higher production capacity than the overflow ball mill, while its discharge particle size is larger.

Cement ball mill

Cement ball mill is also referred to as cement mill. It is mainly used to process the raw materials used in cement production, such as cement clinker, gypsum, slag and so on. Most cement raw materials react to water, which affects the quality of cement. The dry cement process is often used to produce cement.

Cement grinding is the last and the most important link to control the quality of cement. To some extent, the grinding quality can make up for the shortage of clinker quality (that is, grinding can improve the quality of cement) and ensure the qualified rate of final cement.
